NMN for Dogs in 2025: Can It Help Your Pet Live Longer?

NMN for Dogs in 2025

In This Blog

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) is gaining attention for supporting healthy aging in dogs by boosting NAD+ levels, which decline with age. Early studies, including one by Dr. Peter Dobias, showed benefits like improved energy, mobility, and mood in senior dogs. Though not FDA approved for pets yet, NMN appears safe with few side effects. Anera promotes NMN as a science backed way to help dogs live longer, healthier lives, always with vet guidance for safe use.

At Anera, we believe that longevity is not just a human pursuit. It’s for every life we love. And for many of us, that means our dogs. From wagging tails to soulful eyes, dogs aren’t just pets. They’re family.

That’s why we’re diving into something promising and science-backed: NMN for dogs. Could it be the next step in canine wellness?

What Is NMN

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) is a naturally occurring compound that helps the body create NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), a critical coenzyme found in all living cells. NAD+ plays a central role in cellular energy, DNA repair, metabolism, and activating longevity-related proteins called sirtuins.

As we (and our dogs) age, NAD+ levels decline. This drop has been linked to many signs of aging, from sluggish energy and joint issues to cognitive decline.

In both human and animal studies, NMN supplementation has shown promising results in restoring NAD+ levels and supporting healthy aging.

Why Consider NMN for Dogs Health

A 2022 study published in Cell Metabolism showed that NMN could extend lifespan and improve healthspan in mice (source). While these were rodent models, the underlying mechanisms of NAD+ biology are remarkably conserved across mammals, including dogs (source).

Veterinarian Dr. Peter Dobias conducted a small study on 23 senior dogs using NMN and observed:

  • Increased energy and playfulness
  • Improved sleep and mood
  • Better mobility and joint health

Why Consider NMN for Dogs Health

The Science Behind It

Increased NAD+ levels from NMN supplementation may support:

  • Mitochondrial health — the energy powerhouses of your dog’s cells
  • Cognitive function — helping with mental sharpness and memory in senior dogs.
  • Joint & muscle function — for easier movement and better exercise tolerance
  • Metabolic balance — supporting healthy weight and insulin sensitivity

Some research also suggests NMN may reduce systemic inflammation, which is linked to age-related diseases in both humans and dogs.

Is NMN Safe for Dogs?

While NMN is not yet FDA-approved for pets, early reports from vets and pet owners suggest it is generally well-tolerated. Side effects are rare but may include:

  • Mild digestive upset such as loose stools
  • Temporary irritability or restlessness

Always consult your veterinarian before introducing NMN or any new supplement. Dogs with existing health conditions or on medications need special monitoring.

How Much NMN Should You Give Your Dog?

Suggested NMN dosage for dogs (vet-reviewed estimate):

  • Under 30 lbs – 125 mg daily
  • 30 to 60 lbs – 250 mg daily
  • Over 60 lbs – 500 mg daily

Start slow: Begin with a smaller dose every 2 to 3 days and gradually increase to daily use over 2 to 4 weeks.
